"Saint Mary" represents shared sorrow; the hyperrealistic crystal tears reduce the divine mystery to a human scale. The viewer is presented not with a deity, but with a suffering mother. In traditional Baroque art, virgins were often surrounded by cherubs, flashes of light, or symbols of the Passion. Here, the elimination of all secondary ornamentation adheres to a modern conceptual minimalism. Thus, Saint Mary becomes a “floating icon,” which can be appreciated both for its religious value on an altar and for its artistic value in a contemporary art gallery.
